It just means "accepted answer". That's a decision the OP gets to make. MY annoyance is when the OP accepts an obviously wrong answer that is also downvoted heavily by the community, simply because the Answerer shares a common belief or prejudice as the OP. Questions without upvoted answers get bumped to the homepage. The solution to keeping them from being bumped is to vote.

It frustrates me that so many of my answers are on questions still marked as open, If you stop thinking about the green checkmark as indicating if the question is open or not, perhaps it will be less frustrating? I view the checkmark very narrowly - it indicates wheater OP has confirmed the asnwer helped them. With that perspective it would make no sense ...

Well - the results are in. We answered or closed around 500 unanswered questions... And we still have around 3500 unanswered questions :-) SO this shows that as a community, even over the Christmas break, we can still find old or unloved questions and add an answer, or upvote an existing answer, or in many cases improve an existing answer so it gets ...
